Whey Protein Isolate & Concentrate

Many Whey Protein powders are a blend of whey protein isolate and concentrate. I have trialled and reviewed many different brands of whey protein with my clients and also to support my own training. Below I list my favourite brand and products.

Whey Protein is a Good Protein Source for Exercise Recovery and Muscle Strength. Endurance sports, bodybuilding and fitness training are processes that require post workout recovery.

Intense exercise damages muscle fibers by forming small micro-tears. It is a normal result caused by hard intense workouts. Once the workout has ended, the body moves into a recovery period where muscle fibers are rebuilt and grow stronger.

Recovery requires a combination of carbohydrates for energy and protein to rebuild damaged muscles. Overtime the cycle of exercise and recovery increase muscle strength. Carbohydrates are easily absorbed from fruit and cereal products.

However, protein is not as ready available in common high carbohydrate western foods. Whey protein is a popular source for protein because it provides a good supply of proteins and is easy for the body to absorb.

Protein whey products are generally sold as concentrates or isolates.

Concentrates are the product of filtration. The whey material is pushed through a filter where water and small molecules are filtered out leaving the larger proteins trapped behind on the filter.

However, this method also traps additional milk sugar, called lactose, and fats.

The end product has a basic concentration of 70 to 85 percent protein with some of the milk sugar and fats.

Protein isolates are the result of additional steps using a process called ion exchange to remove essentially all the lactose and fats. The end product of isolates is 90 to 95 percent protein.

Isolates and concentrates both provide a valuable source of protein that is easily absorbed into the system. Isolates are more expensive; sometimes double the cost of concentrates.

People interested in building muscle might prefer the isolate as a better source of protein in a more pure form.

Isolates are also a good for those with lactose intolerance. For others, the whey concentrate provides the necessary amino acids without the additional cost of the isolate.

The value of whey protein is the reason for its popularity. It is readily available, provides a good source of protein building blocks and is easily absorbed.
